Welcome to Kellogg High School!

What He Learned...He Had to Earn!

An inspirational story about the man who "brightened" his world!

At Kellogg High School our mission statement is, “Success is Earned!” Our hope and desire is that every student would experience great success in school and subsequently in life. However, we know that no success in school (or life) ever comes without a conscious effort on the part of the student and the staff; and no matter how excellent the educational offerings of a school or how hard the teacher works, it is the student who ultimately must make the choice and the effort to learn.

Thomas Edison once said that genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. The fact that the whole world knows who Thomas Edison is, and that it has benefited immensely for over 120 years from his amazing inventions, lets us know that all of his “perspiration” paid off! This is a man who was pulled out of elementary school because in those days they didn’t know how to diagnose or treat reading disorders and they called him “retarded”. (It has been the contention of some that he was actually just a dyslexic reader.) At age ten he began selling newspapers on passenger trains and was once pulled by the ear to get him on to a moving train. Some believe his hearing became impaired as a result.

Thank goodness your schools have learned over the years how to help students with their individual learning needs. We no longer kick kids out of school for having learning difficulties and we have certainly learned not to pick up kids by their ears. Can you imagine the excuses that Mr. Edison could have used for not going on to experience success?

If you don’t “get it” in life the first time around, don’t quit.

Eventually the “light will come on” and you will experience one of the greatest feelings in the world….”Success which is Earned!

Other quotes by Thomas Edison:

  • Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
  • I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.
  • Just because something doesn't do what you planned it to do doesn't mean it's useless.
  • If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.
